من أنا؟ | Who am I?

Let me introduce myself.

My name is Hassan El-Zayyat. I am an engineer by training, and a photographer, PC enthusiast, and tinkerer in electronics and IoT by inclination. My mother, the late Amina Taha Hussein, was the daughter of the Egyptian educator, author, historian, translator — and journalist — Taha Hussein. Known as the Dean of Arabic Literature, he passed away when I was 24. My father was a diplomat, so I spent only half of those 24 years in Egypt. Still, I thought I knew my grandfather. Recently, I gained access to a collection of his journalistic writings. I was astonished to discover that the kindly, story-telling, child-spoiling grandfather I had known was also a firebrand — a vigorous, unrelenting defender of freedom. Principally freedom of thought, but he made it clear that personal freedoms mattered too. He believed freedom of thought was meaningless without the freedom to obtain knowledge. He wrote:

Woe to the intellectuals — indeed, woe to those who are free — if fear is able to make them compromise their freedom.

There are literally thousands of pages of articles written by Taha Hussein. I am an old man now, but I hope to scan and post as many of them as I can — so that his voice may continue to speak, freely and fearlessly, to new generations.

اسمحوا لي أقدم نفسي

اسمي حسن الزيات. أنا مهندس بحكم التدريب، ومصور فوتوغرافي، وهاوٍ للحاسب الآلي، وعاشق للتجارب في الإلكترونيات وإنترنت الأشياء بحكم الميول. والدتي المرحومة أمينة طه حسين، كانت ابنة المعلم والمؤلف والمؤرخ والمترجم — والصحفي — طه حسين عميد الأدب العربي، الذي توفي عندما كنت في الرابعة والعشرين من عمري. كان والدي دبلوماسيًا، لذا لم أقضي الا نصف تلك الأربعة والعشرين عامًا في مصر. ومع ذلك، ظننت أنني أعرف جدي.

مؤخرًا، حصلت على مجموعة من كتاباته الصحفية. وقد أذهلني أن أكتشف أن الجد الطيب، راوي القصص، المدلل للأطفال الذي عرفته، كان أيضًا ثائرًا — مدافعًا قويًا لا يكل عن الحرية. حرية الفكر بشكل أساسي، لكنه أوضح أن الحريات الشخصية مهمة أيضًا. كان يؤمن بأن حرية الفكر لا معنى لها بدون حرية الحصول على المعرفة. كتب:

“وويل للمثقفين بل ويل للأحرار إذا استطاع الخوف أن يحملهم على التفريط فى الحرية.”

المقالات التي كتبها طه حسين تملأ آلاف الصفحات. أنا رجل عجوز الآن، لكنني آمل أن أمسح ضوئيًا وأنشر أكبر عدد ممكن منها — حتى يستمر صوته في التحدث، بحرية وبلا خوف، إلى الأجيال الجديدة.
